He Was Fired for Believing in an Idea. It Became the Turning Point of His Career.
From building his own business in Canada to helping shape landmark destinations in Dubai and transforming an industry organization, David Macadam's leadership journey is a story of resilience, reinvention, and the relationships that make success possible.
Some careers are defined by the positions people hold. Others are shaped by the decisions they make when everything seems uncertain. For David Macadam, one of the most important moments of his career came not with a promotion or a major business achievement, but with an unexpected dismissal.
Early in his career in Canada, while working on a challenging waterfront retail development in North Vancouver, David recommended a different leasing approach. He believed that giving retailers more flexible commercial terms would help them establish their businesses and ultimately strengthen the shopping centre.
He put his recommendations into a detailed report. His employers disagreed. And he lost his job.
With a young family, a mortgage, and financial responsibilities, it was a difficult moment. Yet what happened next changed the course of his career.
An external industry consultant subsequently validated his recommendations. David realized that his experience, professional judgment, and willingness to challenge conventional thinking had value beyond the organization that employed him.
Rather than returning to the security of employment, he started his own consulting business.
What began with a handful of clients grew into a successful career as an independent real estate professional in Vancouver, working with developers, property owners, and major institutional investors. Sometimes, the experience that feels like the end of an opportunity becomes the beginning of something much greater. Starting Again at 52
After establishing himself in Canada, David could easily have continued along a familiar path.
Instead, in 2004, at the age of 52, he and his wife decided it was time for another adventure.
The opportunity was Dubai. Through relationships built over years in the industry, David secured a meeting with a senior executive at Al-Futtaim. He had just 20 minutes to make his case.
He explained that his expertise extended beyond retail leasing into office, residential, and mixed-use real estate.
That breadth of experience helped him secure an opportunity with the group, initially on a three-month probationary basis.
It became the beginning of his Middle East journey.
At Dubai Festival City, he took on responsibilities across retail, office, and residential leasing, contributing to one of Dubai's ambitious mixed-use developments.
His career in the region subsequently included senior roles with Emaar Properties, where he was involved in major leasing programmes for The Dubai Mall and Dubai Marina Mall, and JLL, where he helped establish and expand its retail advisory business across MENA. But there was another chapter still to come.
The Challenge That Became a Mission In 2013, David was invited to lead the Middle East Council of Shopping Centres.
It was not an easy assignment. The organization was facing financial challenges, declining commercial momentum, and difficult internal circumstances. David recalls that some members of the existing team doubted whether the organization could be turned around.
He made difficult decisions, rebuilt the team, and worked to understand every part of the business. His challenge was no longer simply to deliver a commercial project. It was to rebuild confidence, strengthen the organization's relevance, and bring people together around a shared industry purpose. One of the ideas that helped him reconnect with the retail community was the creation of Souks to Malls – Retail Evolution in the Gulf, a publication capturing the region's retail transformation through stories, historical images, and contributions from industry professionals. The project drew on something David had valued throughout his career: relationships built on trust. Industry colleagues generously contributed their knowledge, experiences, and photographs to help tell the story. The publication became a success, creating fresh opportunities for engagement.
Then came another idea.
Why not create a magazine dedicated to the people who make the retail industry what it is?
With the support of industry relationships and publishing partners, Retail People Magazine was born. What began as an ambitious idea became an enduring platform for sharing industry insights, achievements, and professional stories.
Under David's leadership, MECSR expanded its membership, educational programmes, events, publications, and professional network. His professional record highlights a sevenfold increase in revenue and profitability within his first five years.
The Real Measure of Leadership Across more than four decades in real estate, David has navigated career setbacks, built businesses, led teams, developed major commercial projects, and helped organizations navigate change.
But a consistent thread runs through his story.
The importance of relationships. From the lessons learned working alongside his father in the family business to the people who opened doors in Dubai and supported the transformation of MECSR, trust has remained central to his professional journey.
His experience demonstrates that expertise opens opportunities, but credibility, determination, and relationships help sustain them. Today, alongside his role at MECSR, David continues to contribute to the regional real estate and retail sector through strategic advisory work. His story is not simply about how far he has come.
It is about the challenges he was prepared to face, the opportunities he dared to pursue, and the value of bringing people together. Because leadership is not only about building successful businesses. It is also about building people, relationships, and opportunities that endure.
